I'd also suggest RHSA / RHCE certification (RedHat SysAdmin / Certified
Engineer).
In demand by employers large & small (especially large, with deep pockets).
Also, one of the few respected certs in the Linux world, so even Ubuntu,
etc. shops would respect a RedHat cert.
Probably infinitely more valuable than learning kernel hacking. The
former is very respectable and I'm in awe of those capabilities, but
when looking at career options, there's a lot of serious jobs that never
really need to get into kernel innards.
Other things: Docker & Kubernetes and/or KVM for containerization - a
huge, trendy, and interesting field.
I do think RedHat is the way to go for serious Linux jobs though.
Remember, my opinion is worth less than you paid for it...
